Residential concrete steps leading to home entrance

Safe, Solid Steps That Last

Your steps see constant use. Every time you walk in and out of your home, carry groceries, or welcome guests, your steps need to be level, stable, and safe. Cracked or uneven steps are more than an eyesore. They are a safety hazard and a liability. If your steps are showing their age, or if you need new steps for a new entrance or deck, we can help.

We pour concrete steps and stairs for homes and businesses throughout Quincy and Adams County. From simple front porch steps to multi-level staircases, we build steps that are strong, properly sized, and built to code. We also make sure your steps have the right slope for drainage and the right finish to prevent slipping.

Good steps make your home more accessible and more attractive. Whether you need to replace old crumbling steps or add new ones to improve your property, we can design and build steps that fit your home and your needs.

Types of Concrete Steps We Build

Every property is different, and every entrance has its own requirements. Here are the most common types of concrete steps we install.

Front Porch and Entry Steps

These are the steps that lead from your driveway or walkway to your front door. They need to be the right height, depth, and width to be comfortable and safe. We build front steps that match your home and meet local building codes. We can pour simple, functional steps or add decorative touches like stamped patterns, borders, or colored concrete.

Basement and Garage Entry Steps

If your basement or garage entrance is below grade, you need steps to bridge the gap. These steps often have to handle changing weather conditions and need proper drainage to prevent ice buildup. We pour basement and garage steps that are safe and functional, with handrails and non-slip finishes where needed.

Deck and Patio Steps

Steps that connect your deck or patio to the yard need to blend with your outdoor space. We can pour steps that match your patio finish, whether that is plain concrete, stamped, or colored. These steps also need to be proportional to the height of your deck and meet code requirements for rise and run.

Outdoor Staircases

For properties with slopes or multiple levels, we build outdoor staircases that span larger height differences. These staircases can include landings, handrails, and multiple flights of steps. We design them to be safe, comfortable to use, and built to last through years of weather and use.

If you are also planning patio installation or walkway work, we can coordinate everything so your steps, walkways, and outdoor spaces all work together.

Building Steps the Right Way

Concrete steps are more complicated than they look. The dimensions have to be precise, the foundation has to be solid, and the finish has to provide traction. Here is how we make sure your steps are safe and built to last.

  • Proper Dimensions: Building codes specify minimum and maximum dimensions for step height (rise) and depth (run). We follow these standards to ensure your steps are comfortable and safe to use.
  • Solid Foundation: Steps need a stable base. We excavate below the frost line and pour a concrete footing to prevent settling and cracking.
  • Reinforcement: We add rebar to strengthen the steps and prevent cracking. This is especially important for steps that span a gap or are cantilevered.
  • Non-Slip Finish: We finish the steps with a broom texture or add non-slip strips to prevent slipping when the steps are wet or icy.
  • Drainage: Steps need to shed water, not collect it. We make sure your steps are sloped slightly so water runs off instead of pooling.

We also install handrails when required by code or requested by the homeowner. Handrails add safety and are required for steps with more than a certain number of risers. We can coordinate with local welders or carpenters to add handrails that match your home.

If your existing steps are cracked or unsafe, we can remove them and pour new ones. Replacement steps are built to the same standards as new construction, with proper footings, reinforcement, and finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Building codes require that each step have a rise (height) of no more than 7.75 inches and a run (depth) of at least 10 inches. For residential steps, a comfortable rise is usually between 6 and 7 inches, and a comfortable run is 11 to 12 inches. We design your steps to meet code requirements and be easy to use. Steps that are too steep or too shallow are uncomfortable and unsafe.

Properly built concrete steps can last 50 years or more. The lifespan depends on the quality of the foundation, the reinforcement, and how well the steps are maintained. Regular sealing and prompt repairs help steps last longer. Steps that are exposed to heavy use, deicing salts, and freeze-thaw cycles may need occasional maintenance, but the concrete itself is extremely durable.

We can get close, but new concrete will always look a bit different from old concrete at first. Concrete changes color as it weathers and ages. We can use color additives or stains to match the tone, and over time the new steps will blend in with the older concrete. If you want a uniform look, we can resurface or stain all the concrete at once to make everything match.
